How we price a spring job
From Shelby Palmer, FixDoor's founder:
One broken spring on a door with two or more. If your door has two, three or four springs, they've all been used the same number of times. Every time the door opens the springs unwind and release tension; every time it closes they wind back up. Springs are like brake pads on an axle: one wears out a little before the other, but they wear out at about the same time, and every open and close wears them a little more.
It's better and cheaper to change all the springs at once, because the labor is the same whether we install one spring or two — it's the exact same job, plus about 45 seconds to a minute to wind the second spring. So if the budget allows, replace them all at the same time. If budget is the bigger factor and you need to kick the can down the road, we can do that — and despite what a lot of the private-equity companies will tell you, it's very unlikely the other spring breaks tomorrow, next week or next month. I've seen them last a couple of months, sometimes a year or a little more; they just all break about the same time. This matters most on cedar-overlay doors with four springs: paying four labor rates to change four springs one at a time instead of one labor rate doesn't make financial sense.
Door size and weight. The labor prices hold for most residential doors — single, double, 8-foot tall. At 10 feet the labor rate changes a little. A big heavy door, like a cedar-overlay door, the labor rate goes up a little. That's why we give you stated prices over the internet and then come out for a free estimate: if anything is going to be different, we tell you before any work, and you decide whether to proceed. As a business owner I'm adamantly against service calls and show-up fees, because then you as the consumer have more to lose than I do as the business owner — and that's never a fair place to start.
What we can't see from here. We're happy to tell you over the internet or the phone what we think a job will cost. There are things we can't see from here. We recently commented on Facebook about an influencer who installed shelves right over the garage door spring system — zero clearance to repair or replace the springs. That's something we can't see because we're not there, and yes, there would be an additional charge for that. That's why I'm a devout believer in never paying a service call for someone to show up. We come out, we both expect it to cost what we said, and once we get eyes on it we look for what's in the way — shelves, a floor that isn't level, whatever could go wrong or right on the job. About 95% of the time we're dead on. Garage doors are complex, but it's not rocket science. If there is a change — something we couldn't see — we tell you first, before any work, so you can make a buying decision: move forward, or not. Because you haven't paid a service call, I as the business owner have more to lose than you do: if I don't earn your business I've spent roughly $70 to $90 to put a truck in front of your house. That gets expensive fast if we aren't treating customers honestly and giving fair prices. So we don't play games.

What you don't need
Your spring price covers the spring job. A bearing, cable or drum is added only when it's worn, as a part price with no second labor charge, and the technician shows you the wear.
In today's world of private equity you'll hear a lot of people pushing secondary and tertiary sales. It has become a private-equity standard to sell bearing plates people truly don't need. Here, we don't sell things that we don't need to so some billionaire in New York City can buy another boat.
— Shelby Palmer, FixDoor's founder
Center bearings. Do you need a center bearing every time your springs are changed? No. If it's dragging, if the bearing is physically worn out and you can see black dust coming out of it, it's probably a good idea. In the '90s and early 2000s Overhead Door came out with a plastic bushing that sets in the center bearing plate; they squeak sometimes, but they absolutely keep the torsion bar from cutting through the plate — I'm about 50/50 on those. If a bearing is wearing out we'll probably replace it: a small additional part fee, no extra labor, because everything is already apart. Back to the brake-job analogy — if you're putting on brake pads and the caliper needs replacing, you don't charge a second labor rate for it.
End bearing plates. Look for the wear. Have the technician show you why — you should be able to see and feel it. A failing bearing shows black dust.
Cables. If a cable is frayed, replace it before it breaks. But "this cable is too small for the door" — I've never seen that on a standard steel door; only on a cedar-overlay door. If someone says you must have new cables and can't show you a fray, they're probably selling.
Drums. Everyone loves upgrading a 400-8 drum to a 400-10 or 400-144 "to handle more weight." Manufacturers won't ship a door with the wrong drum size. Souping up your garage door with a bigger drum will never pay back. Keep the money in your pocket.
