Shelby Palmer is the Founder & Lead Technician of FixDoor in Marble Falls, Texas.

A second-generation garage door man

I didn’t choose garage doors so much as grow up inside them. My father, Bud Palmer, got his start at O’Brien Doors in Dallas and then built his own company, American Door and Spring, which became American Service Center. By the 1980s it was the largest independent garage door operation of its kind in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I learned this trade the only way that sticks, from the ground up, answering the phones and running service calls as a kid long before I was the one winding the springs.

That upbringing taught me something I still believe. In the trades, you can’t fake the physical part. You cannot automate or talk your way around a process you haven’t done thousands of times by hand. Real skill in this work comes with grease under the fingernails.

Real, hands-on work in the Hill Country — the foundation of how FixDoor operates.

From the truck to the top of the industry

Over the years I moved from running service to consulting for some of the largest garage door companies and manufacturers in the country, including names on the industry’s Top 100 list, and I’ve worked within the professional standards set by groups like the Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation (IDEA). I’m also an Industry 4.0 specialist, which is a fancy way of saying I bring modern diagnostics, smart-home integration, and data-driven maintenance into a trade that has historically been slow to change.

But the technology only matters because of the hands-on foundation under it. The smart systems help my technicians get you a faster, more accurate answer. They don’t replace the craftsmanship.

Why I built FixDoor the way I did

I founded FixDoor on a philosophy I call the Humble Servant approach, and it shows up in our motto: Better, Faster, Humble. Better means unmatched workmanship. Faster means we show up on time and turn the job around quickly. Humble means we tell you the truth, we don’t upsell, and we’ll happily recommend the cheap fix when the cheap fix is the right one.

I believe in that model so much that I turned down buyout offers from private equity firms to keep FixDoor independent. The moment a company like ours gets folded into a one-size-fits-all corporate playbook, the honest, local service is the first thing to go. I wasn’t willing to trade that away. The credit for our reputation belongs to my technicians, people like Collin, Joey, and Joseph, who carry that standard into every garage they walk into.

Serving the Hill Country, including the folks who serve us

Marble Falls is home, and I take care of it like home. I personally handle the annual UL 325 safety compliance service for Marble Falls Fire Rescue. When the fire department’s rolling steel door blew a spring, the standard fix was a four-week wait for a new drum. We rebuilt it in house and had them back in service in 48 hours, because the people who protect this town shouldn’t sit behind a dead bay door. That’s the kind of work I’m proudest of.

Off the clock, I’m a recreational skydiver, which my family will tell you explains a few things about me. On the clock, I’d rather be the most trusted door company in Central Texas than the biggest.
